Although it is never easy, horse owners at some time in their lives must say good-bye to their friend. Your veterinarian is available to help you make an informed decision about your equine’s health and to humanely euthanize your horse. Most often, veterinarians will use lethal injection as the preferred method. If done properly, this method is quiet, bloodless and humane. Other veterinarians may prefer a gunshot method where again, if done correctly, can be instantaneous, bloodless and humane. It also provides less complications for body removal since no chemicals were used which could sicken and kill predators.
Regardless of the method of euthansia, prompt disposal of the body is necessary. Most likely choices include burying, cremation or rendering. Contact your local officials before burying or cremating your horse. Once again, your veterinarian may be able to provide you with disposal options.
The following is a list of Nebraska companies which provide pick-up and disposal of large animal bodies. Perhaps one of these companies can assist you when needed. (Note: this list may not be all inclusive & information may have changed since originally published.)
