Body Score Conditions
Horse ownership comes with great joy and a lot of hard work and expense. Two of the best things we can do for our horses are to be an educated owner and establish a good relationship with a veterinarian. There are many resources on horse care and training. Some of those resources are better than others. One reliable resource is your local extension office.
As we go into winter, I would encourage you to check out the extension’s website and go the horse section. It is important to brush up on good nutrition and how to spot good quality hay versus not so good hay so we know we are feeding our horses what they need this winter. Another section that is beneficial for every horse owner to visit is to learn how to body score your horse. This will help you accurately gage your horse’s body condition. Especially this winter when they have their thick coats it can be hard to asses from just looking at them if they are staying in good condition. Often times when it becomes apparent to the naked eye your horse has already dropped a score or two in their body condition. During the winter months you can score your horses once a month and make sure they are maintaining a good condition. A detailed color chart depicting the charactoristics of the scoring can be seen here…..
